Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is an extremely popular ingredient found in a wide range of natural skin care products.  This isn't surprising as the cactus-like plant has many beneficial properties for the skin.

Aloe Vera is a succulent, which is a part of the lily family that looks more like a cactus.  It is found in desert-like conditions and can survive for long periods without water.  Ancient Egyptians used Aloe Vera to heal wounds.  Cleopatra even referred to Aloe Vera as "the plant of immortality".  Aloe Vera's anti-inflammatory benefits are, perhaps, this plant's most common claim to fame.

Aloe Vera is a natural pH adjuster, as well as a wonderful natural toner.  Specifically, Aloe Barbadensis Miller, has a pH very close to that of human skin.

Aloe Vera acts as a natural delivery system for skin care products.  When  Aloe Vera listed as the first ingredient, opposed to water, it helps the other ingredients can penetrate up to seven layers deep.  This is especially important when attempting to introduce antioxidants deep into the inner layers of the skin.  Aloe Vera is also a highly oxygenating substance to the skin, helping to regenerate and rejuvenate on a cellular level.
