Which Moisturizer is Right For You?

Picking out a daily moisturizer seems like an easy task.  Any creamy moisturizer will do, right?

Not necessarily.  There are a variety of skin types and conditions in the world and a variety of moisturizers for each one.  Doing a grab-n-go at the skin care counter can cause more harm than good.

It is important to establish your skin type and any conditions that may be causing issues.  It is best to see a professional esthetician to examine your skin and determine skin type, but there are a few simple rules of thumb you can follow.

For example, if you have acne or breakouts that occur  and dryness, your skin is oily, not dry.  The dryness you are experiencing is from a lack of hydration, not oil.  Dry skin usually occurs after menopause when the pores produce less and less sebum (oil).  If you are dry on the sides of your face, but experience occasional breakouts in the T-Zone, you most likely have combination skin.  Another skin type is sensitive skin.  These people usually have reactions to chemicals and most fragrance-laden products.

Aside from skin type, it is imperative to look at possible conditions as well.  A dermatologist can diagnose psoriasis, eczema or rosacea.  These conditions can play a big part in your moisturizer choice as well, and you might want to look for a moisturizer that is designed for sensitive skin types.

When standing in front of the skin care counter, pay attention to the label.  Make sure you are choosing a moisturizer that is tailored to your skin type and any diagnosed conditions first, and beauty desires second.  If you are looking for a heavy cream for anti-aging, but you have an oily complexion, this might not be the product for you.  (Congratulations though, oil is a sign of youth!)  You might want to instead look for an oil-free moisturizer that contains a high level of antioxidants.  These antioxidents, such as green tea, pomegranate, or vitamin C, can help protect your skin from cellular damage without adding any unnecessary oil.
