Fish Oil

It seems like everyone these days is talking about the fantastic benefits of fish oil.  Omega, omega, omega.  Every television show, doctor, and mother-in-law is telling you to take fish oil.

Well, this is actually good advice.  As an Esthetician, I concern myself greatly with the skin.  This concern goes well beyond what is applied topically to the skin.  Healthy skin really does start within.  Internally, fish oil is a top notch way to earn an external glow.

Fish oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.  The two most important of these fatty acids are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).  A lot of hullabaloo and attention has gone to DHA which does wonders for your brain.  Not so shiny in the spotlight is EPA.  EPA is very important to your outer layers.  EPA regulates the skin's oil production, can help prevent acne and even boost hydration.

EPA works as an antioxidant and combats inflamation, making EPA effective at protecting the skin from UV sun damage as well as repairing damaged tissue.  EPA can also help to block the UV enzymes that destroy collagen, promoting elasticity and staving off sagging skin.  It is widely recommended to get about 550mgs of EPA daily.  I up my dosage to twice that amount during times of extreme cold or hot weather for a little extra protection from the elements.
