Minerals For Your Skin: Zinc

Another important Mineral For Your Skin is Zinc.  This little guy is especially beneficial for acne sufferers because it is believed that some forms of acne are caused by a lack of Zinc.

Zinc can help control the production of oil on the skin and even some of the hormones that cause breakouts.  Vitamin A is often used to treat acne.  Zinc tends to increase the amount of Vitamin A in the bloodstream, making it easier for the Vitamin A to travel throughout the skin.  V

On a cellular level, zinc is an important mineral for the structure of cell membranes and proteins. Other skin-related benefits of zinc include it's ability to promote wound-healing and protection from harmful UV radiation.

For internal health zinc is great for strengthening the immune system, the eyes and sense of smell.  You will see tons of zinc-related cough drops in the health food stores.  Zinc supplements can usually be found with the immune boosters in addition to their spot by the other minerals.

It is best to get zinc through nutrition and the most bioavailable source is through animal sources.  If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you may wish to supplement zinc.  The recommended daily amount of zinc is 15mg.  Doses higher than 25mg have been linked to anemia and copper deficiency, so check with you doctor to see if you are deficient.

Recommended: organic red meat, kidney, liver or seafood like shellfish, oysters and scallops, pumpkin seeds (must be soaked), ginger, oats and eggs
